Hiking the Vrmac Ridge: The Bay of Kotor from Above

Montenegro's Best Kept Hiking Secret

Most visitors to the Bay of Kotor climb the fortress walls above Kotor Old Town, take their photos and consider the hiking done. They miss the better option entirely. The Vrmac Ridge, the mountain spine that separates Kotor from Tivat, offers a quieter, longer and far more rewarding walk with views that make the fortress climb look like a warm-up.

The full ridge traverse from Kotor (Muo) to Tivat covers approximately 14 kilometres and takes 6 to 8 hours. A shorter out-and-back to Fort Vrmac is 7.4 kilometres and takes around 3.5 hours. Both options deliver sweeping panoramas across the Bay of Kotor, the open Adriatic and the Lustica Peninsula.

The Route

The most popular starting point is the village of Muo, on the bay side of the ridge. The trail climbs steadily through Mediterranean oak and pine forest before reaching the ridgeline, where the views open up dramatically. Fort Vrmac, an Austro-Hungarian military fortification built in the 1860s, sits at the halfway point and makes a natural rest stop.

From the fort, you can either return the way you came or continue along the ridge toward Sveti Ilija, the highest point, before descending into Tivat. The full traverse ends within walking distance of Porto Montenegro, making it possible to finish a mountain hike and be sitting at a marina restaurant within 20 minutes.

What Makes It Special

Three things set the Vrmac Ridge apart from more famous Mediterranean hikes. First, the views are genuinely world-class. The Bay of Kotor is a UNESCO-listed fjord, and seeing it from 700 metres above, with cruise ships reduced to white dots and Kotor Old Town a thumbnail sketch, puts the landscape in a perspective no waterfront walk can match.

Second, you will likely have the trail largely to yourself. Unlike the Kotor fortress walls, which draw thousands of visitors daily in summer, the Vrmac Ridge sees a fraction of that traffic.

Third, the trail connects two of Montenegro's most important property markets. Starting in Kotor and finishing in Tivat, you walk above the very coastline where Barok Estates International operates. For buyers evaluating different locations, there may be no better way to understand the geography.

Practical Information

The best months for the Vrmac Ridge are April through June and September through November. Summer is possible but the midday heat on exposed sections makes an early start essential. Bring at least two litres of water as there are no reliable sources on the ridge. The trail is well-marked but proper hiking shoes are recommended for the rocky sections near the summit.

For property owners at Porto Montenegro, Lustica Bay or along the Bay of Kotor, the Vrmac Ridge is a weekend walk you will return to repeatedly. It is one of those rare experiences that improves with familiarity.
