Beyond the Marina

Porto Montenegro is an exceptional home base, but Montenegro's real depth reveals itself when you leave the marina. Within 30 minutes to three hours of Tivat, you can reach UNESCO-listed old towns, national parks at 2,500 metres altitude, hidden beach coves and mountain villages where daily life has barely changed in a century. Here are five day trips that show different sides of the country.

1. Kotor Old Town (20 minutes)

The obvious first choice, and it deserves it. Kotor's UNESCO-listed medieval Old Town is one of the best-preserved in the Mediterranean. Enter through the Sea Gate, explore the network of squares and churches (the Cathedral of Saint Tryphon dates to 1166), then climb the fortress walls for views across the entire Bay of Kotor. Allow a full morning. Combine with lunch at one of the waterfront restaurants outside the walls.

2. Perast and Our Lady of the Rocks (40 minutes)

Drive the bay road to Perast, Montenegro's smallest and most photogenic town. The waterfront baroque palazzos were built by sea captains who traded across the Mediterranean, and the Maritime Museum tells their story. Take a water taxi to Our Lady of the Rocks, an artificial island church created in 1452 by sinking stone-laden boats. The story alone is worth the trip.

3. Lovcen National Park and Njeguski (90 minutes)

The road from Kotor to Lovcen climbs 25 hairpin bends above the bay, delivering increasingly dramatic views with every turn. At the summit, the Njegos Mausoleum sits at 1,657 metres with views across four countries. Stop in Njeguski village on the way down for prosciutto and cheese tasting at the farmhouses where these products have been made for centuries.

4. Budva Riviera (30 minutes)

Budva offers a completely different energy: sandy beaches, a lively Old Town, waterfront bars and Montenegro's busiest nightlife. The Riviera stretches south through Becici, Przno and Sveti Stefan, each with its own character. For a quieter experience, head to the small coves south of Sveti Stefan. The Riviera Swissotel development is reshaping the premium end of this coastline.

5. Durmitor National Park (3 hours)

The longest day trip on this list, but arguably the most rewarding. Durmitor is Montenegro's highest mountain range (Bobotov Kuk reaches 2,523 metres) and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Black Lake, a 20-minute walk from the town of Zabljak, is the most accessible introduction. The Tara River Canyon, Europe's deepest gorge, is nearby. This trip works best as an overnight, but a determined early start from Tivat makes a long day trip possible.
