The Drive That Changes How You See Montenegro

There are scenic drives, and then there is the Bay of Kotor. The road that traces the inner shoreline from Herceg Novi to Kotor is frequently cited as one of Europe's most beautiful coastal routes, and for once the reputation is justified. Mountains rise vertically from the water on both sides. Medieval villages cling to the shoreline. The road itself twists through tunnels, over bridges and past waterfront churches that have stood since the twelfth century.

The full drive is approximately 45 kilometres and takes about 90 minutes without stops. With stops, which you will want, allow at least half a day.

The Route: Herceg Novi to Kotor

Herceg Novi: Start at the entrance to the bay. The Old Town's fortress complex and botanical gardens are worth 30 minutes before you begin the drive. From here, the road follows the northern shore of the bay with views across to the Lustica Peninsula.

Risan: The oldest settlement on the bay, founded by Illyrians in the third century BC. The Roman mosaics here are small but genuinely remarkable. A 15-minute stop is sufficient.

Perast: The jewel of the bay. This former maritime republic produced 68 sea captains and once rivalled Venice for naval prestige. The waterfront is lined with baroque palazzos, many now restored as boutique hotels and restaurants. Take a water taxi to Our Lady of the Rocks, an artificial island church in the middle of the bay. Allow at least an hour.

Kotor: The UNESCO-listed Old Town needs no introduction, but arriving by car from the bay road rather than from Tivat gives you the approach that medieval traders would have recognised. The walls climbing the mountain behind the town are visible for the final 20 minutes of the drive, building anticipation the way a great city entrance should.

Timing and Practical Advice

Drive this route in the morning. The light on the eastern shore of the bay is best before noon, and you avoid the afternoon cruise-ship traffic in Kotor. In July and August, the road between Perast and Kotor can be congested. June and September offer the same scenery with a fraction of the traffic.
